Thomas Jefferson The Author Of America |
|
When the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia with the idea of voting for independence from England, the Congress selected a committee to draft a declaration of independence. The committee was made up of John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingstone, and Robert Sherman. These men then asked Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence because he was known for having a writing talent. Jefferson began his work on June 11, 1776, and wrote a number of drafts. After presenting his final draft, the committee further changed the document and submitted it to the Continental Congress on June 28. On July 2, the Continental Congress voted for independence and refined its Declaration of Independence before releasing it to the public on July 4th. The Declaration of Independence was signed on the southwest corner of 7th and Market Streets in Philadelphia. This Declaration of Independence was sent to England and helped lead our country to freedom as a united nation. Today,
we still use the Declaration of Independence as our symbol of
the freedom we gained from England at the end of the
American Revolution. |
