Colonists Become Angry with Great Britain

Because of the French and Indian War, Great Britain had a large debt that it needed to repay. To help pay off this debt, King George and the English Parliament decided to pass some laws that would require the colonists to pay taxes on certain items.  The money Great Britain earned from these taxes then would help pay the war debt.  When the colonists discovered that Great Britain had passed these laws or acts, they became very angry with King George and revolted against the taxes because they felt they were unfair.

 The Sugar Act

The first act, the Sugar Act, was passed on April 5, 1764 by King George III.  This tax was placed on coffee, indigo, and some types of wine.  This only effected some of the people.  Everyone was very upset and it was the first time the colonists wanted a say in how much they were taxed and on what things. This led to the famous saying, "No taxation without representation!"
