Boston Tea Party

           Chaos at the harbor

After being upset with a new tax on tea as a result of the Tea Act of 1773, the colonists decided to take action against Britain. The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773 when American patriots dressed up as Mohawk Indians and walked onto a British ship carrying tea.  The disguised patriots dumped all the tea that was on the three ships into the Boston Harbor.  They emptied 342 chests of tea weighing 90,000 pounds into Boston Harbor. That much tea would have made 24 million cups of tea.  As a result,  the Boston Harbor was closed until the tea had been paid for.
