The French and Indian War began on July 3, 1754. The French were trying to claim all the land west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Mississippi River as their own and the British did not want them to have it. This war lasted until 1763 when the British won the war. During this war, the colonists, who fought on the side of the British, learned a new way to fight from the Indians. The Indians taught the colonists to use the land as protection, to surprise their enemies, and to shoot better. This way of fighting would help the colonists to later beat the British in the American Revolution.
